Stanislaus County is a U.S. UU. County in California's San Joaquin Valley. Stanislaus County constitutes the modest Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The county is located just east of the San Francisco Bay Area and serves as a bedroom community for those working in the eastern part of the Bay Area. Between 1843 and 1846, when California was an independent province of Mexico, five Mexican land grants totaling 113,135 acres (458 km2; 177 square miles) were granted in Stanislaus County. Rancho Orestimba y Las Garzas, Rancho Pescadero and Rancho Del Puerto were located on the west side of the San Joaquin River, and Rancho Del Rio Estanislao and Rancho Thompson on the north side of the Stanislaus River. In addition, in 1844 Salomon Pico received a 58,000-acre (235 km2; 91 square mile) Mexican land grant in the San Joaquin Valley, somewhere near the Stanislaus River and the San Joaquin River in what is now Stanislaus County.
However, the concession was never confirmed by the Land Commission. As housing prices have risen in the San Francisco Bay Area, many people working in the far south of the Bay Area have opted for a longer trip and have moved to Stanislaus County for relatively affordable housing. In the US, the county has a total area of 1,515 square miles (3,920 km), of which 1,495 square miles (3,870 km) is land and 20 square miles (52 km) (1.3%) is water. There are several rare and endangered species found in Stanislaus County.
The Clarkia of beak, (Clarkia rostrata), is listed as a candidate on the Federal List of Endangered Species. It has only been found in associations of gray pine and blue oak in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, a habitat found at moderately high elevations. Colusa Grass, (Neostapfsia colusana) is listed as endangered by the State. It is restricted to spring pools.
Torrey, 198 Modesto City-County Airport has previously had several scheduled passenger flights. At present, its main air traffic is general aviation. Other airports (general aviation) around the county include Oakdale Airport, Patterson Airport and Turlock Air Park. In the county, the population was dispersed, with 31.1 per cent under 18, 9.8 per cent from 18 to 24, 29.0 per cent from 25 to 44, 19.5 per cent from 45 to 64 and 10.4 per cent aged 65 or over.
The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 93.4 males. The Office of Administration and Budget has also designated the Modesto, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area as a component of the largest San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, CA Combined Statistical Area, the fifth most populous combined statistical area in the United States.

The 1973 film, American Graffiti, starring Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss and Cindy Williams, was set in 1962's Modesto; however, the weekend cruise scenes were filmed in Petaluma, California. At one time, Modesto was the hub of operations for Tidewater Southern Railway, which had its main line in the center of Ninth Street, a major north-south street. The nearest large open seaport is the Port of Stockton, which is used for ocean ships transporting goods, in particular cement, fertilizers and agricultural products, from California to abroad. Local attractions include the 25-foot (8-meter) high Arch of Modesto, the McHenry Museum, and Lucas Square, which contains a statue dedicated to film director and Modesto native George Lucas.
Downtown Modesto has lost some of its taste of yesteryear with the loss of the Covell Hotel, the incredible Art Deco Strand and the Sears Building, but traffic flow has improved considerably. In the 1963 film It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, the truck driver played by Jonathan Winters refers to the cargo that drives to Modesto. In the 1985 film Murphy's Romance with Sally Field and James Garner, the character of James Garner asks Sally Field where she was from and her answer was This time Modesto, Ca. .
